The countywide resurvey’s completion marks a significant achievement for Jefferson County, as it brings its tax maps up to current standards and guarantees precision and dependability for residents and departments that use this essential information. This project, which spanned four years and cost $3 million, included the updating of more than 400,000 parcels and the modernization of an obsolete Geographic Information System (GIS) that had been posing security risks and inconsistencies.
The new parcel data will have far-reaching impacts across the county, from emergency services to local businesses and residents. Commissioner Joe Knight highlighted the importance of the pinpoint accuracy of the maps for law enforcement, first responders, and residents who want to know exactly where their property lines lie. This spatial accuracy is essential for tax assessment and collection and has legal implications for land ownership and boundaries.
The updated technology will not only improve efficiency and accuracy but also open new possibilities for data analysis and visualization. With a user-friendly Parcel Lookup app receiving more than 1.5 million unique visits, Jefferson County is now equipped with cutting-edge technology that can be leveraged for better decision-making and planning in the years to come.
