My SR&ED Claim Was Selected for Review. Now What?

There are many options available if the CRA reviews your SR&ED claim to improve your chances of receiving a successful outcome.

Prepare for CRA review:

  1. Thoroughly read the CRA’s letter, which should address many facts such as projects it wants to review, science or financial issues, fiscal year(s), and who is representing CRA. If CRA is vague in its letter, ask for clarification, so you can prepare appropriately.
  2. Preparation is paramount.
  3. Gather the key technical person for each project the CRA wants to review. Ensure that person is well versed in SR&ED eligibility criteria and that they have read and understood the project description and what was claimed. Ensure they have supporting documentation available, and know what expenditures were claimed on their project and why.
  4. Financial lead should know all expenditures for each project and have supporting financial documentation such as invoices, contracts, organization chart, etc.
  5. This process can be very challenging if unprepared, and it is highly recommended that businesses consult SR&ED experts before embarking on challenging a claim.
